August Book News

New from Lise McClendon!

A new Bennett Sisters Mystery arrived at the end of July from Montana author Lise McClendon, a sequel to her original trilogy “Birds of a Feather” Here is the publisher’s description:

A wintry Welsh evening. A house full of relatives, hangers-on, and malcontents. A British/French family hosts Elise Bennett, and gets the extra benefit of two of her sisters. Will Twelfth Night ever arrive for these revelers? A holiday to remember… and forget.

When Elise Bennett, youngest of the five sisters, is invited to spend the long holiday break with her new boyfriend, Conor (from ‘Lost in Lavender’) she is thrilled. Who wouldn’t be? A remote Welsh manor house, a chance to mix with the clan, long walks on the snowy hillsides– but things are not so simple in the countryside. Not with this family.

Conor’s brother, Duncan, misbehaves toward Elise, causing two of her sisters to rush in with emotional reinforcements. Then an undesirable French relative arrives, with an entourage. A house that already feels crowded is now bursting with intrigue, day-drinking, bird shoots, and so much cooking. And whining about cooking. When a death breaks the monotony in the kitchen, no one is relieved. Because, at this point, they are all suspects.

BIRDS OF A FEATHER was originally published in three parts: Swan & Peacock, Crazy as a Loon, and Fly the Nest. Read it now as one novel in this compilation, buy the paperback, or listen to the audiobook now available. Available at Amazon: https://amzn.to/3ynTasY

LESLIE BUDEWITZ: Seriously, how did it get to be August already? I’m as puzzled as you are! I’m also delighted to tell you I’ll be at the Bigfork Festival of the Arts this year, Sat-Sun, August 7-8, in the village of Bigfork, with all my books! I’ve got THREE new books — also hard to believe — since I last participated, in 2019: The Solace of Bay Leaves, the 5th Spice Shop mystery, Carried to the Grave and Other Stories, the 6th Food Lovers’ Village mystery, and Bitterroot Lake, my suspense debut. I hope to see you there, celebrating the artistic bounty of this most beautiful place we call home!

April Book News

Happy Spring!

LESLIE BUDEWITZ: Delighted to say I’ll be making my suspense debut this month with BITTERROOT LAKE, written as Alicia Beckman (Crooked Lane Books, April 13, in hardcover, ebook, and audio).

From the cover:
When four women separated by tragedy reunite at a lakeside Montana lodge, murder forces them to confront everything they thought they knew about the terrifying accident that tore them apart, in Agatha Award-winning author Alicia Beckman’s suspense debut.

Twenty-five years ago, during a celebratory weekend at historic Whitetail Lodge, Sarah McCaskill had a vision. A dream. A nightmare. When a young man was killed, Sarah’s guilt over having ignored the warning in her dreams devastated her. Her friendships with her closest friends, and her sister, fell apart as she worked to build a new life in a new city. But she never stopped loving Whitetail Lodge on the shores of Bitterroot Lake.

Now that she’s a young widow, her mother urges her to return to the lodge for healing. But when she arrives, she’s greeted by an old friend–and by news of a murder that’s clearly tied to that tragic day she’ll never forget.

And the dreams are back, too. What dangers are they warning of this time? As Sarah and her friends dig into the history of the lodge and the McCaskill family, they uncover a legacy of secrets and make a discovery that gives a chilling new meaning to the dreams. Now, they can no longer ignore the ominous portents from the past that point to a danger more present than any of them could know.

Read an excerpt and find out where to buy the book on my website. While I miss seeing readers face to face, one advantage of doing book events online is that anyone can join an event hundreds of miles away, so I hope you’ll check out the Events page on my website and find one that calls to you!

And we will connect in person, soon. You can tell me what books you’ve been reading and we’ll laugh and touch and connect. Promise.

She accepts a daring ride behind a stranger on a powerful motorcycle which leaves her with a driving need to find him again and ride facing the wind. The search leads her to a slummy tavern where a motorcycle gang cuts loose and hangs free. While watching to see if Joe arrives to join a group of bikers, Reba witnesses the kidnapping of a young girl and reports the crime. Unaware, Reba is about to become the number one suspect and the target of the real killer, a woman with a burning vendetta who rides with the biker gang.

LESLIE BUDEWITZ: I’m delighted to report that The Solace of Bay Leaves, the 5th Spice Shop mystery, is now out in all formats — paperback, ebook, and audio. Pepper Reece never expected to find her life’s passion in running the Seattle Spice Shop. But when evidence links a friend’s shooting to an unsolved murder, her own regrets surface. Can she uncover the truth and protect those she loves, before the deadly danger boils over?

Library Journal, in a starred review, calls Pepper “a mature and introspective sleuth” and Solace a “complex, well-developed mystery.”

I’ll be joining mystery and cookbook club members at the Bozeman Public Library for a chat about the Spice Shop series on Mon, Nov 16 at 7 pm. And my newsletter subscribers will get the first peek at the cover for my suspense debut, coming in April 2021, on November 15. Sign up on my website. A Deal to Die For debut novel released in October by Suzie Sarkozy, (AKA Sue Toppen). Sue is a member of our group who moved from Polson to AZ, but returns often.

Review of A Deal to Die For: Former librarian, Alberta (Birdie) Alton returns to Arizona from Nebraska in search of finding some stability in her miserable life. She takes a job as the only female car salesperson in the AutoMall, an establishment overflowing with colorful, and, it turns out, a few dangerous characters. Armed with a sharp wit, a wise guy attitude, and a determination to outlast her male counterparts in the cut throat car business, Birdie finds herself embroiled in a high-stakes treacherous endgame after a major adversary at the dealership is found murdered with a weapon having her fingerprints all over it.

In her debut novel, Suzie Sarkozy expertly captures the inner workings of an automobile dealership through the eyes of a delightful heroine, Birdie Alton, the only female car salesperson in the Automall. The well-drawn, colorful characters entertain the reader through the author’s keen sense of humor as Birdie finds herself caught up in the drama of the cut-throat automobile business. The murder of a male adversary at the dealership tests her fortitude and ingenuity and quickly moves the book from a fascinating and humorous study of a female trying to survive in a man’s world to a page turner you won’t be able to put down. Highly recommended! – DUKE SOUTHARD, award-winning author of The Fallacy of Closure and the Detective Parker Havenot series

LESLIE BUDEWITZ: Launch Day! One of a writer’s favorite phrases—along with “the end,” “bestseller,” and “I loved it!” The Solace of Bay Leaves, my 5th Spice Shop mystery, will be out in paperback on October 20, from Seventh St. Books. (The ebook and audio are already available; supply chain disruptions meant a delay in the pb, but it will be worth the wait, i promise!)

Pepper Reece never expected to find her life’s passion in running the Seattle Spice Shop. But when evidence links a friend’s shooting to an unsolved murder, her own regrets surface. Can she uncover the truth and protect those she loves, before the deadly danger boils over?

Given these unusual times, I won’t be doing any live events, but I do have a few planned online. Visit my website or my Facebook Author page for details. Find the book in all the usual online and in-person booksellers, including Bookworks (Whitefish), The Bookshelf (Kalispell), Roma’s Kitchen Shop (Bigfork) and the Bigfork Art & Cultural Center giftshop.
