October Book News

20140919_180837

LESLIE BUDEWITZ: Oh, October! Thrilled to announce the release, on October 4, of KILLING THYME, my third Spice Shop Mystery, set in Seattle’s Pike Place Market.  When Pepper investigates the murder of a market artist, she roots out long-buried secrets with unexpected ties to her family, will she be digging her own grave? Read an excerpt and find the buy links on my website.  Join me for a Mystery Teac at the Bigfork Library on Tues, Oct 4, from 3-5 pm. We’ll talk mysteries, sip tea and eat cookies (recipes in the Killing Thyme (final)book!), and play mystery trivia! If you’re in Missoula, please join me for a book talk at Fact & Fiction on Thurs, Oct 6, at 7 pm. And swing by the Bigfork Art & Cultural Center for my launch party and signing on Friday, Oct 7, 5-7 p.m., and visit the annual Watermedia exhibit sponsored by the Montana Watercolor Society at the same time! (I peeked — it’s fabulous!)

I’ll be in Seattle on October 13 — signing at Seattle Mystery Bookshop at noon, and reading/talking/signing a 7 p.m. at Third Place Books in Lake City.

Wherever you are, take thyme for a good mystery!

Tentative release date for Don’t Mess With Mrs. Sedgewick is October 11, 2016

Roberta Sedgewick is stuck in a house that is too empty without her beloved Burton—the rat died and left her with his dog and rooms that rattle. She convinces her three golfing buddies, all in their seventies, to sell their homes and buy adjoining condos. The widows intend to spend the rest of their days golfing, gambling at the casino, and having fun. Oh, the heaven of it. But then they all hire the same maid who uncovers long-hidden criminal secrets kept by each woman. Oh, the horror of it. The reputations of their deceased husbands, a banker, a minister, and a respected farmer, will be tarnished forever. Three of the widows could face jail time, and the fourth fears for her life. Whatever will they do with the conniving, blackmailing maid?

If you grew to love the characters in Marie F. Martin’s previous novels Maternal Harbor, Harbored Secrets, and Ratham Creek, you will treasure Roberta and her friends in the mystery Don’t Mess With Mrs. Sedgewick.

Killing Thyme (final)LESLIE BUDEWITZ: Writing a little every day — that’s the writer’s motto. KILLING THYME, the third book in my Spice Shop Mysteries set in Seattle’s Pike Place Market, will be out October 4, so I’m busy with book launch fun, and of course, working on the next book. I’ll be in New Orleans for Bouchercon, the annual mystery convention, Sept 15-18, and that’s when I turn over the presidency of Sisters in Crime, the international writers’ organization, to another wonderful writer, though I’ll remain on the board for another year. Back home, the Montana Book Festival runs Sept 20-25 in downtown Missoula; on Friday, Sept 23, at 2:00, I’ll be part of a panel discussion called “Delicious Words: Writing About Food,” with several other fiction writers, poets, and essayists, and a cookbook author! And October 1-2 is the annual Flathead River Writers Conference in Kalispell; I’ll be speaking and teaching both days.

P.S.: The ebook of ASSAULT & PEPPER, the first Spice Shop book, is on sale online for 1.99, and the paperback of GUILTY AS CINNAMON, the second entry, is on sale for 7.19! Here’s the Amazon link, but you can get the sale prices at B&N and Kobo, too!

I hope to see you some thyme — er, time — soon!

     BIGFOOT RETURNS!!          By Nan McKenzie

bigfoot

He’s back!  Bigfoot is back in the Montana mountains in all his stinky, huge, scary glory!  He returns to connect with his champion, Zoe Zahn, along with Sam Hill, Darcy and George, Valli and Rauol, and Montana Governor Judy Harris!

The second and last of the Bigfoot stories has Zoe back at the beautiful round cabin, where Bigfoot finds her.  She does her best to keep him safe from all the crazies who want to kill and “study” him.

Bigfoot has a girlfriend, Helga, and she pops out a baby, Helgette, with Zoe’s help.  Another beast, Ssshhhrrrmmm is lonely, and wants Helga for his own, which causes huge fights between him and Bigfoot.

Zoe makes her way back into the mountains several times, is attacked by wolves, and Bigfoot carries her high to a big cave.

She sets up protests, argues with the angry sheriff, publishes her first Bigfoot book (which becomes a huge success), and makes a lot of cabin improvements.

Impressive tiny Zoe makes her way through all the pitfalls and problems with panache, humor, and a fierce protection of the strange, frightening monsters in the woods.

Now available on Amazon and Kindle, soon to be in print.

August Book News

New release from Lise McClendon
“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that every girl wants a few days in Paris with a hot Frenchman.”I’m thrilled to be here with the Montana Women Writers, who live far away from me on the other side of the state! (I live on the upper Madison River near Yellowstone National Park. I call it that hangie-down part of the state:-)) They’ve been gracious enough to include me here so here goes my news.

I have a new novel coming out in August, the third in my Bennett Sisters series. This is women’s suspense fiction about five lawyer sisters, named after the Jane Austen characters but only slightly. The first in the series was published as a stand-alone in 2009: Blackbird Fly. It has remained one of my bestselling books though so in 2014 I wrote a sequel: The Girl in the Empty Dress. Now comes the third book: The Things We Said Today. (There is a novella in between the last two, so technically this is the 4th in the series.)

I find the life choices women make to be endlessly fascinating. That is not to say men’s lives aren’t equally captivating but there is something about women’s choices that make them more complex, don’t you think? I grew up in the middle of three sisters so I made my first book about the middle Bennett sister, Merle (they call her Merdle=Merle+middle). I am not a lawyer myself — nor have I played one on TV — so the books are more about their lives outside work. Women in the hyper-competitive world of law are the stuff of legend. Look at all the politicians and their spouses who went to law school! Whether or not they practice law it gives them a solid background, and plenty of fodder for fiction. things-we-said-web

The first two books are set mostly in rural France, in the Dordogne, which shapes much of the stories as well. In each book I get to focus on, and learn more about, different sisters, and I have to say their personalities are all their own. All different, from the Bohemian who is set to get married in Scotland in The Things We Said Today, to the beauty who loves the law, to the Martha Stewart one and the wild child. In this story we get to see them all interact together, something readers have told me they wanted.

Although this is a series these are still in the ‘linked stand-alone’ category and can be read in any order. If you’re like most you’ll want to start at the beginning though. And I am offering a free e-book of Blackbird Fly to anyone who joins my newsletter mailing list. Check that out over here. The new book is available for pre-order now. Look for The Things We Said Today on August 15 in trade paperback and e-book everywhere.

LESLIE BUDEWITZ: In early August, I’ll be sharing my first Food Lovers’ Village short story, free, with my newsletter subscribers, so if you’re not already a subscriber, join me now! When Wendy the Baker’s family gathers after her grandmother’s funeral, she and Erin discover a decades-old secret that could prove to be still deadly.

On August 6-7, I’ll be at the Bigfork Festival of the Arts, sharing stories and signing books. Join me on the village streets — my booth will be in front of Frame of Reference Gallery on Electric Avenue. (And my hunny, Don Beans, will sing and play guitar at the Festival stage, at 1:00 Saturday!)

Killing Thyme (final)

If you’re a fan of my Spice Shop Mysteries, set in Seattle’s Pike Place Market, I hope you’ll consider pre-ordering the third book, KILLING THYME, at your favorite indie or online retailer. It will be published October 4, in paperback, e-book, AND audio book. pre-orders are hugely important to authors, and may well determine whether the series continues. Read an excerpt and find out where to buy it on my website.

By the way, both ASSAULT AND PEPPER and GUILTY AS CINNAMON are now available in audio and large print, as well.

Stay cool — read a book!
